Vectis Fairway Lodge donates £1,000 to support Independent Arts’ creative health work

2026-05-06T13:58:59+01:00

Independent Arts, the Isle of Wight’s creative health charity, is delighted to announce a £1,000 donation from Vectis Fairway Lodge. The donation was presented at the charity’s East Cowes Singabout group by Robin Spencer, Immediate Past Master of Vectis Fairway Lodge, who chose Independent Arts as his supported charity over the past 12 months. The funds were raised through a series of events organised by Lodge members. Matt Hitt, Fundraising Manager at Independent Arts, said: “We are deeply grateful to Robin Spencer and everyone at Vectis Fairway Lodge for their support. Contributions like this help us continue delivering creative programmes that make a real difference to people’s health and wellbeing across the Island.” The donation will support Independent Arts’ ongoing programme of workshops and community projects, which use creativity to improve mental and physical wellbeing, reduce isolation, and help people live healthier, more connected lives. One such programme is Singabout, a series of weekly singing groups held across the Island, including in Cowes, East Cowes, Freshwater, Lake, Newport and Ryde. Open to all, Singabout offers a welcoming space to come together through song - supporting breathing, memory, confidence and overall wellbeing, while having fun in a relaxed, social setting. Independent Arts extends its sincere thanks to everyone involved in the fundraising efforts. This generous donation will help ensure that creative health support remains accessible to those who need it most.

New Wight Games Festival Launches Across the Island This Summer

2026-04-13T16:51:04+01:00

A brand-new celebration of sport, games and community spirit is coming to the Isle of Wight this summer, helping to raise vital funds for local charities, including Independent Arts. The Wight Games Festival will take place from June to August across the Island, bringing together a wide range of activities in what organisers describe as a “joyful mash-up of traditional sports, games and quirky challenges.” From sailing, cricket and tennis to chess, colouring competitions and even welly wanging, the festival offers something for everyone. Designed as an inclusive, Island-wide event, the festival encourages people of all ages and abilities to take part, whether they are trying something new or returning to something they love. With activities that engage both mind and body, it reflects a shared focus on wellbeing, creativity and connection across the Island community.   The festival has been created by Mike Christie, founder of the Wight Proms Festival and long-time Ambassador for Independent Arts. Mike said: “It gives me enormous joy to give something back to the Island community. The Isle of Wight is packed with extraordinary clubs, groups and individuals doing brilliant things and this Festival is our chance to showcase that incredible variety. I wanted to create something where absolutely everyone can take part in something that interests them, whether it’s a traditional sport they already love or something completely unexpected that they haven’t even tried before. It’s about rethinking what we see as a ‘sport’, making the Festival fully accessible, bringing people together and, at the same time, raising money for three extremely important local charities who do amazing work on our Island.” At Independent Arts, we see the value of creativity and activity in supporting healthier, happier lives. Matt Hitt, Fundraising Manager at Independent Arts, said: “Independent Arts is an Island-based creative health charity, improving people’s health and wellbeing on the Isle of Wight through creative activities that enable people to live well and thrive. Mike Christie has been supporting Independent Arts as our Ambassador for a number of years. His support through the Wight Proms Festival has been invaluable, and his continued backing through the Wight Games Festival will help us continue delivering creative health workshops that support islanders’ mental and physical wellbeing.” The festival is free to take part in, with donations encouraged throughout. Funds raised will be shared between Mountbatten Isle of Wight, Independent Arts, and the Isle of Wight NHS Trust charity, supporting essential work across health, wellbeing and community care. Details of participating events and activities will be announced in the coming weeks. Those interested can register their interest via the festival website. Organisers hope the Wight Games Festival will become a regular fixture in the Island calendar, celebrating the diversity, creativity and community spirit that make the Isle of Wight such a special place to live. Remembering Carol Martys

2026-01-22T14:13:40+00:00

Founder of Independent Arts We are deeply saddened to share the news that Carol Martys, founder of Independent Arts, passed away in December 2025. Carol was a visionary, a passionate advocate for the arts, and a pioneer in using creativity to improve lives long before “creative health” was a recognised field.Independent Arts was founded by Carol in 1987, rooted in her belief that creativity is not a luxury, but an essential part of wellbeing- something everyone deserves access to. As one of our earliest guiding principles stated, Independent Arts existed to provide “something to look forward to”, a phrase Carol felt, and always maintained, was every person’s right.Carol’s journey toward founding Independent Arts began with her work in some of the most overlooked settings. She initiated a drama group at Parkhurst Prison alongside scriptwriter Ray Allen, using creativity as a tool for expression, rehabilitation and hope. Around the same time, her work attracted the attention of regional arts leaders, and Carol was invited to chair a committee linked to the early development of Solent Arts.Shortly after, Carol was offered the role of Director of a new Island-based project funded by CSV (Community Service Volunteers), called Blow Your Own Trumpet. The project trained musicians, artists, dancers and performers to work in state and private residential care homes, bringing joy, stimulation and meaningful engagement to older people. Its impact was so significant that CSV extended the funding for a second year. When Blow Your Own Trumpet came to an end, Independent Arts was already firmly taking shape. Having demonstrated the value of this work, Carol and the team successfully secured contracts with the Isle of Wight Health Authority, Social Services and private residential homes. Independent Arts formally became a registered charity in 1987, with Carol’s conviction and leadership at its heart. From the beginning, Independent Arts was supported by an extraordinary group of trustees and champions, including Khalid Aziz (our first Chair), Hugh Harrison, Tim Neale (then Head of Radio Solent), Baron Ross of Newport MP, and Lord Mottistone as President. What began as a small operation working from Carol’s home steadily grew- moving through Quay Arts and Whitecroft Hospital, until Independent Arts was able to establish premises of its own, opened with the support of Sheila Hancock, another long-time supporter of Carol’s work.As the organisation expanded, Carol oversaw the appointment of specialist music and art managers, ensuring the charity could continue to grow in quality, reach and professionalism. Although personal circumstances eventually led Carol to step down as Director, her influence never faded. With support from Anthony Minghella and funding from Red Nose Day, Independent Arts was able to build a strong team that carried her vision forward.Carol was especially proud of the impact Independent Arts had on people whose lives had been shaped by disadvantage. She often spoke of former prison participants whose lives were transformed through creativity, including one man who, after a history of violent crime, rebuilt his life through the arts, later becoming a published poet and speaker. Independent Arts Art Sale Raises £690 to Support Creative Health

2025-11-17T16:47:47+00:00

Independent Arts’ second annual Art Sale has raised £690 to support the charity’s creative health workshops and community programmes across the Isle of Wight. This year’s exhibition was a special one, featuring work not only from local artists but also from Independent Arts’ own practitioners, participants and staff, many of whom deliver or take part in the charity’s creative health projects in the Creative Hub, care homes and community settings across the Island. The exhibition featured a vibrant mix of mediums, including lino prints by Paul Armfield, oil paintings by Davina Smith and Trudie Wilson, photography by Julian Winslow, collage and prints by Evie Clarke, watercolours by Polly Zanardi, and ceramics and sculpture by Kirstie and Kit Hayler, alongside mixed media work by Lisa Anthony. Usually, exhibitions at Independent Arts’ Creative Hub gallery focus on artwork produced in community workshops and wellbeing projects. This special exhibition offered a one-off opportunity for local artists connected to the charity to exhibit and sell their own work, with 30% of all sales donated directly to support Independent Arts’ programmes. Ralph Ridler, Operations Manager, said: “We’re so grateful that so many of our amazing practitioners got involved and were so willing to sell their work to support the charity. It was fantastic to see so many new faces visiting the Creative Hub, taking in the exhibition, and purchasing great artwork for a good cause. The funds raised will help us to reach and support even more Island residents through our creative health programmes and workshops.” The event included a well-attended Private View evening and attracted many new visitors to the Creative Hub. Following the success of the Art Sale, Independent Arts has also expanded its retail offer at the Creative Hub on Newport High Street. The charity now stocks a small, bespoke selection of pieces by Island artists and makers, alongside their own range of creative gifts and seasonal items - with all proceeds helping to fund their work improving wellbeing through creativity. The next exhibition to open at the Creative Hub will be “Workshops for Wellbeing”, an annual showcase celebrating artwork created by residents across care and residential homes on the Isle of Wight.

Island Arts Organisations Unite for The Big Draw Festival 2025

2025-08-18T16:19:57+01:00

Independent Arts, Newport Minster and Quay Arts are bringing The Big Draw Festival back to the Isle of Wight, for ‘Drawn to Newport’, so pitch up and dive in to the raft of events and workshops running Saturday 23rd August to Saturday 30th August across all three sites to celebrate the power of drawing and to bring people together for shared creative expression. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the world’s biggest drawing festival. Since 2000, The Big Draw Festival has taken place annually across over 35 countries, involving thousands of events and encouraging over four million people back to the drawing board. Arts education charity, The Big Draw, which is the founder and driving force behind the festival, believes that everyone can draw. They promote drawing as a universal language that has the power to change lives and unite people of any age, background, race, or religion from around the globe. Bringing the festival to the Isle of Wight in this milestone year, the three organisations are coming together to celebrate the 2025 festival theme, ‘Drawn Together,’ which highlights the power of drawing to connect people and build communities. This programme has been made possible thanks to the support of the Newport Business Association. Their funding has helped bring these creative opportunities into the heart of the town, encouraging local people and visitors alike to engage in the joy of drawing. With a full family friendly programme being offered by all, there will be opportunities to join in with sketching trails, doodle walls, and even drawing with sewing machines! Drop in to the free drawing studio at the Quay, visit the drawing and colouring station at the Minster, and try your hand drawing a portrait through the window glass at Independent Arts. The Big Draw is an amazing opportunity for anyone, of any age to take part. Matilda Barratt, director of The Big Draw says: “For a quarter of a century, The Big Draw has championed drawing as a tool for communication, expression, and understanding – helping individuals and communities come together and connect. “Drawing is a universal language that transcends barriers, bringing us closer and enabling us to communicate in ways that words cannot. ‘Drawn Together’ serves as a reminder that the simple act of making a mark can build bridges, forge bonds, and create shared experiences.” Events will be running from Saturday 23rd to Saturday 30th August at all three sites. Finding Folk

2025-05-01T11:49:02+01:00

An Independent Arts Project delivered in partnership with Sovereign Network Group, Isle of Wight Finding Folk is an Independent Arts project delivered in partnership with Sovereign Network Group, Isle of Wight. Set up to run in four housing sites in West and East Cowes and Ryde, the project is aimed at giving residents the chance to spend a couple of hours with others in their housing community, sharing stories and conversation, and working alongside a professional artist from the Island in some fun, simple craft activities. The tales shared are based on old myths and superstitions, mostly from the Island’s own folklore traditions, but lots of fun has already been had swapping old superstitions and tales from residents own memories and lives both on and off the Island. Independent Arts, Kerry Tindall explained “It’s a great way to get a conversation going whether it’s about why we count Magpies or avoid the number 13, it’s amazing how many of us automatically follow superstitions, touching wood and so on, perhaps it’s a bit of a ‘just in case’ precaution!” SNG’s Community Investment and Partnerships Lead Toby Eaglen agreed “At SNG we’re clear that we want the people who live in our communities to thrive, and that’s why we have taken the decision to fund Independent Arts – to build resilient communities, combat isolation and help older people to make those vital connections. The tradition of folk stories being swapped and shared between people down the generations is a great way to get people talking and meet many of these objectives.” The project began in January this year and is due to run until February 2026.
